What makes an Electromagnet…

![]() |
ØIt
is the combination of electricity and metals ending with the creation of
a
magnetic field.
|
![]() |
ØRequires
an external power source.
|
![]() |
Ø The
magnet’s field is produced by electricity flowing through a cylindrical
coil of wire with a core made of iron or other metal.
|
![]() |
ØThe
electrical charges emitting the field lines end at the respective poles,
causing
an “opaque” material.
This causes the center metal and the coils to stay separate from
each other.
|
![]() |
ØWith
this arrangement, there are two fields present: the initial electric
field and
the resulting magnetic field.
|
![]() |
ØWhile
plugged into a source and turned on, the electric current is in motion
, creating the magnetic field. Turned off, no magnetic field is
created.
|
![]() |
ØCan
be used with Alternating (AC) or Direct (DC) Current flowing electric
current.
